What to do in Svilengrad - Bulgaria

Svilengrad is a little Bulgarian town in the province of Haskovo (Haskovo Oblast), that is more or less south-eastern Bulgaria. Being a small town in the outskirts of the country, the city has a population of approximately 18.500 people.

Svilengrad is quite close to the Turkish-Bulgarian border, namely Kapikule-Kapitan Andreevo border post. There are only 15 kilometers between the border and the city. Due to its location advantage, there is a higher level of employment in Svilengrad than the cities around.

The city is divided into two by the River Maritsa (Meriç in Turkish, Evros in Greek) and there is an old bridge in the middle of the city which was built by the Ottomans.

The city was built on what once remained from a Thracian settlement, as many cities were in north-western Turkey and south-eastern Bulgaria.

Since Svilengrad is a small town, don't expect highly crowded places or a city centre full of people in any time of the year. However, there are 4-5 casinos in the city, which are great for gamblers.

Those casinos operate on a membership basis, but you can become a member when you go into one of them, so that's not a problem. If you're a foreigner, they will ask for your passport, record it and give you a membership card. The best thing about casinos is that eating&drinking (including cigarettes) are free as long as you're inside and gamble.

Svilengrad has a small city-centre, a pedestrianized street full of shops and restaurants. On the street, you can find little 1 Euro shops where you can find many things quite cheap, moreover, there is a Chinese shop, run by a Chinese guy, where you can find almost everything you need for fairly good prices.

Apart from that, there is a TeknoMarkt in Svilengrad and in comparison to Greece and Turkey, electronics are really cheap inside.

If you like hiking or just walking around, Svilengrad is the way to go. You can simple walk the streets or move out of the town for some nature walk. There are many beautiful forests and streams around Svilengrad.

If you like driving, Svilengrad is again a good place. Because of the narrow roads full of green, and surrounding little villages, you will have a nice drive. While driving around, you can discover a lot of Turkish and Bulgarian villages, which is nice to explore. But make sure you have you vignette with you.

As you see, although Svilengrad is a little town, it has a lot to offer to those who know where to look. For further questions, please comment!
